JULY 7TH REMEMBERED

Three months after the London bombings of July 7, 2005, Bridge Builders project director Gowri Pillai was inspired to hold a peace vigil in Newham.  It was held at the East Ham soccer stadium at Upton Park and commemorated the 52 people who died and the hundreds injured in the bombings.

Such was the poignance of the Upton Park vigil that Bridge Builders have marked the July 7th anniversary in 2006, 2007 and 2008 with peace events at Langdon School, East Ham.  Youngsters from Langdon linked with faith groups, community leaders, politicians and other schools in Newham to stage the commemorations.

Among those remembered were 20-year-old Shahara Islam, of Plaistow, who died on a No. 30 bus in Tavistock Square.

As well as honouring the dead and injured and observing one minute’s silence at each event, the gatherings looked forward with optimism to a borough, a city and a world that would be at ease through understanding, tolerance and peace.
